Toronto’s Subway Stations Now Have Free Wifi

The Toronto Transit Commission and BAI Canada announced today that all underground TTC subway stations now have full wifi capabilities, letting riders connect to the internet for free.

Commuters passing through all 75 of Toronto’s stations can connect their phone to TCONNECT to gain access to wifi on subway platforms.

BAI Canada also provided an update on outfitting Toronto’s underground stations with cellular connectivity—a crucial feature for busy, urban professionals who rely on wifi to send emails on route to the office.

So far, 53 stations in Toronto are now cell service compatible. The only line to date that’s fully complete is the U-shaped Yonge-University line. Cellular connectivity is expected to be possible across all subway stations by the end of 2017.

Although the network was built for all cellular carriers, for now only Freedom Mobiles users can tap into talk, text and data services at subway stations in the city.

BAI Canada said they’re committed to working with the TTC to get other carriers on board, but no word on when non-Freedom Mobile users can expect the wifi services to be available to them.

Meanwhile, TCONNECT has rolled out to dozens of stations over the past few years, at no cost to TTC riders or Toronto taxpayers. BAI Canada reports there are roughly 130,000 log-ins per day to TCONNECT from 90,000 unique devices.
