Uber Testing Self-Driving Cars in Toronto

Uber is testing self-driving cars in Canada.

The company confirmed this week that it has deployed two autonomous vehicles in Toronto. Uber noted that while the cars are capable of autonomy, there are human drivers behind the wheel at all times.

The province of Ontario enacted legislation last year that allows for on-road testing of self-driving vehicles—with some rules. One of those rules is that any car must still have a person in the driver’s seat.

“We’re excited to advance the work of our Advanced Technologies Group’s Toronto lab,” Uber spokesperson Susie Heath told CP24. “We have obtained a permit from the province for future development testing.”

Toronto has become one of Uber’s areas for research and development in the artificial intelligence field. Others include Pittsburgh and its headquarters in San Francisco.
