Spotify Renews Deal with Merlin to Boost Indie Exposure on Platform

Spotify has landed a deal with Merlin, a global digital rights agency that specializes in the independent label sector.

The multi-year license agreement continues a nine-year partnership between the two companies and is structured “to reflect and promote the value of Merlin’s collective offering of its members’ repertoire, while offering improved marketing and advertising opportunities and enhanced access to data,” according to Spotify.

Merlin licensed Spotify at launch in 2008 and is the service’s fourth-largest partner. Labels represented include Beggars Group, Hopeless Records, Mad Decent, and Sub Pop.

Launched in Sweden in 2008, Spotify boasts more than 100 million active users, including over 50 million paying subscribers, making it the largest music streaming service globally, ahead of both Apple Music and Google Play.
