Uber Halts Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Project Following Crash in Arizona

Uber has grounded its entirely fleet of autonomous vehicles following an accident in Arizona involving one of its self-driving Volvos.

According to reports of the incident, Uber’s vehicle was not at fault; while the Volvo was in self-driving mode, it was another car that crashed into it making a left turn.

The autonomous vehicle was carrying two Uber employees monitoring the technology but no customers. No one involved in the accident was seriously injured, even though the Volvo was flipped on its side.

Uber operates self-driving cars in Pittsburgh and San Francisco but has decided to temporarily suspend the project in those cities as well.

The transportation company is currently being sued by Google’s self-driving unit, Waymo, for allegedly stealing autonomous driving technology.
