With Spring on Horizon, Niantic Reveals Largest Update to Pokémon Go Since Summer Launch

When Niantic launched Pokémon Go last summer, it seemed to sweep the world, even though it was an incomplete, broken game—admitted even by John Hanke, the head of the development studio behind the augmented reality phenomenon.

Over the past several months, Niantic has made only minor updates to the game, releasing new content in trickles rather than floods. That all changes this week: Pokémon Go is getting a whole new generation of Pokémon plus new game mechanics and virtual items.

“Starting later this week, you’ll have the opportunity to catch more than 80 Pokémon originally discovered in the Johto region in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games,” the company announced this morning. “We’ve also implemented some new features to enhance your Pokémon GO experience.”

Here are the updates:

  • More than 80 Pokémon will be added to the game, including new evolutions.
  • New gameplay mechanics, such as slowing down Pokémon with berries.
  • New items, such as the Pinap Berry, which doubles the amount of candy you receive.
  • An expanded wardrobe, including new hats, shirts, and pants.
