Donald Trump Doesn’t Plan on Switching to Official POTUS Twitter Handle
While Barack Obama’s team has openly offered its social media accounts to the next leader of the free world, President-elect Donald Trump says he does not intend to take over @POTUS, the presidential twitter account established by Obama’s administration as social media became a key platform for communication for the first time.
“I think I’ll keep [@realDonaldTrump],” he told the Sunday Times. “I’d rather just let that build up and just keep it. It’s working,”
@POTUS was created in May 2014. Obama sent 342 tweets as president and garnered 13.5 million followers. Meanwhile, Trump’s account dates back to March 2009. With more than 34,000 tweets, his 20 million followers get a much different experience.
Trump admits he won’t have as much time for Twitter once he becomes president. However, he will continue to use it as a platform to combat fake news about him.
“I’m covered so dishonestly by the press,” Trump told the Sunday Times of how most major outlets are left leaning (CNN and The New York Times, as two of myriad examples, publicly endorsed Hillary Clinton during the election). On Twitter, he says, he can get out his side of the story and let the people determine fact from fiction.
