A First for Canada, Automated Vehicles Begin Tests on Road

Ontario has officially out self-driving cars on its roads.

A pilot project involving autonomous vehicles cars developed by the University of Waterloo and BlackBerry QNX is now operational in the province, a first for Canada, according to the Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence.

However, the nation has a long way to go. Among G7 nations, Canada is dead last, according to Barrie Kirk, executive director of the industry association.

The university and BlackBerry are both testing Lincoln sedans as part of a 10-year pilot project that Ontario is putting $3 million into.

According to the association, 93% of traffic collisions involve human error. Kirk believes up to 80% of accidents could be eliminated in a world of autonomous driving.
