Apple More Interested in Augmented Than Virtual Reality, Says CEO Tim Cook

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, believes that augmented reality may be a more commercially viable technology than virtual reality.

In an interview with ABC News, Cook said both are “incredibly interesting” but believes AR is the bigger opportunity.

An example of AR is Pokémon Go—digital effects imposed over real-life. Virtual reality, a more immerse but isolating experience, requires a headset.

Cook says AR  “gives the capability for both of us to sit and be very present, talking to each other, but also have other things—visually—for both of us to see.” This more “present” mature of AR is the key, believes Cook.

Still, VR has interesting use cases, added Cook, particularly in areas of gaming and education.

Currently, Apple does not have an AR or VR product.
